As a recent college graduate, entering the job market is the next step to the many, many years ahead of me in my career.  In an increasingly competitive environment where hiring has slowed, being well prepared and intentional about your search is ever important.  Below are some tips to help with your job search – from answering the age old question, “what do you want to do for a living?” to acing the interview– read on for insights to help you build confidence, showcase your strengths and put your best foot forward.

1. Do Some Research

• Look into the company/organization

• Get familiar with the job description

• Know the role and why YOU want it

2. Practice Your Introduction – “Tell me about yourself”

• Know who you are, a bit on your experience/strengths, and why you are excited for the experience

3. Dress for Success

• Wear clean, professional clothing (it is better to be overdressed than under)

• Arrive 10 minutes early

• If the interview is virtual, ensure your tech works beforehand

4. Confidence is Key

• Make sure to smile, make eye contact, speak clearly

• Slow down and take your time – taking a moment to collect yourself and think of an answer shows poise and confidence

5. Use Real Examples

• Explain how YOU the situation and how you positively impacted the result

• Don’t worry about feeling like a situation is unimportant or small– this is the time to show you understand and can utilize your strengths

6. Highlight Strengths and Understand Weaknesses

• Be honest about what you are working on, and show how you have/or are working on improving beyond this

• Make sure the position and company are a good match for YOU – asking about success in the role and/or what the interviewer likes about the company are good starting points
